Classical Journal Survey

Classical Journal Survey of Perceived Quality of PhD Education in Classical Studies

This survey is intended to assess the perceived quality of the education provided by American and Canadian PhD programs in classics and closely related disciplines. This is not an “objective” evaluation of library resources, publication records, placement results and the like of the sort carried out by the National Research Council. Instead, we are concerned with the more subjective sense professionals and aspiring professionals in the field have, as to which programs in the field are strongest, and in which specific areas. Nor do the questions the survey asks have to do with the reputations of universities, departments or units and their faculty and programs generally. Instead, we are interested specifically in PhD-level education: which American and Canadian departments, whatever their individual personnel and their various strengths and weaknesses, do the most effective job of training doctoral students in Greek and Latin literature, Greek and Roman history, and Greek and Roman archaeology?

The survey is now closed. Results will be published in late spring via CJ Online, and will be posted later on this page.
