Tulane University (MA only)

A brief description of the department:
The Department of Classical Studies at Tulane University has a small MA program that works well in tandem with our undergraduate curriculum. The focus of our MA program is to prepare students for further study in Classics at the doctoral level by providing them with intensive language training along with closely supervised training in research.

Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: Latin literature, Greek tragedy and epic, Roman history, and archaeology.

Average number of new graduate students per year: 2-4 new MA students
Approximate percentage of applicants this represents: About 70%

For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
We expect applicants to have the equivalent of a major in at least one of Latin or Greek, as well as a good GPA and GRE scores above 1200.

Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: Recently we have offered tuition plus stipends to 2-3 students/ year, and tuition waivers to several more students.
Number of guaranteed years of funding: MA: 2 years
Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: Students serve as TAs, assisting professors, in their first year, and they either continue in this or teach a section of introductory Latin under the supervision of a professor in the second year.

PhDs and MAs awarded since January 2004: Ca. 5 MA students

Major changes anticipated in the department over the next few years, if any:
We anticipate new hires to replace several faculty who have left the university.
